Incorporated in 1989, the City of Dana Point is named after Richard Henry Dana Jr. (1815-1882), a Harvard-trained lawyer, seaman, and author of the classic sea journal, Two Years Before the Mast (1840). In his journal, Dana documents his voyage from Boston around Cape Horn to California on the merchant ship, Pilgrim. Therein, Dana describes the area once known as Capistrano Bay, as "the most romantic spot on the California coast." Today, Capistrano Bay is known as Dana Point. Dana Point is home to 35,110 residents and is characterized by nearly seven miles of prominent coastal bluffs and rolling hills along the Pacific Ocean. Most noteworthy of these bluffs is a unique promontory known as the "Headlands" which overlooks Dana Point Harbor, one of the most significant man-made alterations of the Orange County coastline.

The group is intended to be made up of boaters that routinely make use of the harbor or intend to use the harbor for recreational boating. We welcome other interests to join the group but only to make sure that we have accurate information and facts.

Dana Point Yacht Club is a casual, informal, fun-loving group dedicated to boating activities. We are a friendship oriented club promoting boating experiences to all ages. We have a great junior program, one of the finest sail race calendars, a great fishing program and many scheduled cruises throughout the year. Sponsors of "The Richard Henry Dana Charity Regatta" in September where the proceeds from the race benefit a local Orange County Charity. Our goal is to maintain our reputation as "The Friendliest Club on the Coast."

Located in Dana Point Harbor's West Basin, DWYC is an active full-service yacht club, serving its members and the local community for 20 years. DWYC has a great Junior Sailing program, an extensive yacht racing program and billfish tournament and hosts many charitable events including the high-profile Volvo Leukemia Cup and the heart-warming Armed Forces Holiday Dinner.

The club welcomes boat owners and non-boat owners for membership.

The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary was established by Congress in 1939 to assist the Coast Guard in promoting boating safety. It boasts nearly 33,000 members from all walks of life who receive special training so that they may be a functional part of Team Coast Guard. Auxiliarists assist the Coast Guard in non-law enforcement programs such as public education, vessel safety checks, safety patrols, search and rescue, marine environmental protection and Coast Guard Academy introduction programs for youth. Auxiliarists volunteer more than 2 million hours annually to benefit other boaters and their families.
